Reader’s Question:

What will affect my commercial vehicle insurance quote in Michigan? Is there a list of commercial vehicle insurance companies I can choose from?

Irene

Detroit MI

There are different types of insurance being offered by insurance industry. There are health insurance which aims to take care of the financial factor when you get sick. In this kind of insurance, the main factor that will affect the insurance cost is your health status. There is also life insurance which aims to take care of the family left behind by the policy holder. In this type of insurance, the probability of how long or short you will live will affect the insurance premium. And, there is also vehicle insurance which is also known as car insurance, motor insurance or auto insurance. This type of insurance aims to protect you from financial backlash when your car gets involved in a car mishaps.

One of the major factors that will affect your vehicle insurance quote is the level of protection or coverage that you want to include in your policy.

If you just want to meet the required coverage mandated by law, then you can get the bodily injury liability and property damage liability coverage. These 2 give protection to the innocent third parties – people and properties hit by your car.

There are 16 states that require personal injury protection (PIP). This will give you reimbursements for your medical bills and salary loss incur due to car accident.

Collision and comprehensive coverage will pay in the incident that your car get damaged or stolen, even if it’s your fault.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage will cover you if the motorist at-fault has none or does not have enough vehicle insurance policy coverage.

There are still a lot of different types of coverage to answer your different needs. But the above mentioned are the most common types. The law only requires you to have bodily injury liability and property damage liability coverage. If you will only get what is required by the law, then your vehicle insurance quote will be minimal.

But if you want to include other types of coverage because you and your car need them, then you can expect to get a higher vehicle insurance quote. Nevertheless, you will feel more secure about your car as you will be financially protected from whatever kind of mishaps your car will get involved with.

Reader’s Question:

I have a vacation home in Orlando, Florida and I reside most of the time in New York. I want to buy a car in Florida, register and insure it there. Is it possible that I could use it when I went on vacation? This is a commercial vehicle, can I still get a quote online?

Henry

Orlando, FL

Yes Henry, it should be possible for you to register and insure a car to keep at your vacation home in Florida. There are actually many “snowbirds” that live part of the year in Florida and the other part in different parts of the US or even out of the country. The state of Florida requires any seasonal or part time resident living in Florida for 90 days or more during the year to get a Florida personal injury protection (PIP) and property damage liability (PDL) car insurance for their vehicle.

Since it sounds as if your car will remain in Florida year round then you will need to keep this Florida minimum insurance on the car for the whole year. For the months that you are not in Orlando, Florida you must continue to maintain car insurance on your vehicle or surrender your Florida tag and registration at the nearest driver license or tag office. If you opt to do this, when you next return to Florida you can register the vehicle after you have obtained proof of Florida insurance once again. Contact the FL Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (HSMV) to get information on how to register a car in Florida.

Reader’s Question:

My car’s windshield got broken in an accident that involves my friend’s surfboard. I want to know if I can claim from my car insurance or not. By the way, if I don’t get the glass replaced soon, can I still drive the car around even with that broken glass? Will I be ticketed by the Florida police?

Ryan

Miami, Florida

In Florida, if you carry only the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and the Property Damage Liability (PD), which is the minimum auto insurance required by the state, then expect that your damaged windshield will not be covered.

Typically, the repair or replacement of a windshield is covered by the Comprehensive Coverage. In your state, if you carry this kind of policy, the deductible is waived when the windshield is being replaced. This is noted under Florida Statute 627.7288. So, if you only have liability coverage in your policy, it is likely that you would have to personally fund the replacement of your windshield.

It is possible that you may be ticketed for a broken windshield, especially if the law enforcer finds the damage to be obstructing your view and considers it unsafe. Under Section 316.2952, it is stated that a vehicle must have a windshield. However it is not stated that the vehicle has to have a windshield that is in “proper condition.” Therefore, this conviction would have to be assessed further in court. If the court finds the broken windshield to be unsafe, then it would state that you are violating Section 316.610, which is driving an unsafe vehicle.

Reader’s Question:

What is the basic liability car insurance coverage in Kansas? What are differences between each coverages provided within a car insurance policy?

Wilfred

Topeka, KS

Kansas law requires its citizens to purchase a minimum amount of car insurance. Car insurance is best used to protect yourself against expenses you could not otherwise afford due to any car accident. When you purchase an auto insurance policy in Topeka, KS, you are actually buying several individual coverages. Each insurance coverage protects you against various types of losses. Generally, there are six basic coverages in car insurance, these are: Bodily Injury Liability which covers for the other person’s medical expenses, rehabilitation, funeral costs, and other covered costs, if you or your family are at fault in a car accident. In addition, it pays for settlements of lawsuits and your legal expenses. Property Damage Liability that covers when you or your family members damage other property in an accident. This auto insurance coverage pays for the repair, replacement, or cash value of the other owner’s property. This auto insurance coverage also pays for your legal expenses. Personal Injury Protection (PIP or No-Fault) covers the rehabilitation, medical expenses, funeral expenses, lost wages, and in-home assistance for you and your passengers injured in an accident, regardless of who was at fault at the accident. Passengers who own their own vehicles collect under their own insurance policy. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Protection covers you or your passengers for rehabilitation, medical and funeral costs. It also covers settlements of lawsuits resulting from an accident caused by an uninsured, underinsured or hit-and-run motorist. Yourself and your family are covered as pedestrians or when riding a bicycle. Collision coverage pays for the repair of your car in a collision or rollover, regardless of who was at fault. If your car is totaled, it pays for replacement of your car at current market value, minus the deductible. Comprehensive coverage pays for the repair of auto damage caused by windstorm, flood, fire, hail, vandalism, hitting an animal and some other events. If your car (or any covered part) is stolen, the company will replace your car (or parts) at current market value, minus the deductible.

Bodily injury liability, Property damage liability, PIP/No-Fault and UM/UIM coverage are mandatory under Kansas auto insurance law. On the other hand, Collision and Comprehensive coverage are not mandatory.
