Low Cost Commercial Vehicle Insurance
Reader’s Question:
A friend of mine, who’s only 20 years old, has been complaining about his commercial vehicle insurance here in California. What can I tell him to do so that he can be able to save money from it?
Gem
Anaheim, CA
A young driver like your friend could be able to get lower commercial vehicle
insurance in California if he just follows some simple things. Here are some helpful tips for him:
1. Make sure that his vehicle is equipped with safety features such as anti-lock brakes, car alarm, airbags, etc. If he already does, let his vehicle insurance company know about this so that he will be considered low risk, thus, he can save money from his vehicle insurance.
2. If he still studies, he can get a good student discount on his vehicle insurance if he has an average of at least B in school.
3. Let him know that he has to reduce his mileage so that his risk to have accident will be reduced as well.
4. Tell him that he has to take care of his credit history so that he can be perceived as a responsible person, thus responsible in driving as well.
5. Keep a low profile vehicle and inform him not to drive a sports car because this has higher vehicle insurance premiums.
6. Advise him that he has to shop around for vehicle insurance quotes and compare them. He has to visit at least three vehicle insurance comparison quotes sites so as not to miss offer from other sites. This will give him a much wider basis for comparison and boost his chances of having better vehicle insurance quotes.
Commerical Van Insurance Discounts?
Reader’s Question:
I heard commercial van insurance companies in Maryland offer discounts for security device system but I am just wondering what security devices are they. I need to get discount on my car insurance because I cannot afford it any longer. Do you know any car insurance companies who offer this kind of discounts?
Michael
Baltimore, MD
Generally, most insurance companies in Maryland and in other states will allow to get anti-theft or security device discount which would apply to Comprehensive coverage.
The discount that you can get may vary from one insurance company to the other but typically this can save you up to 5% to 20% savings and this is usually applied to car with a passive disabling device which renders the fuel, ignition or starting system inoperative.
Most newer car models have this type of system already installed as standard equipment. The car insurance discount will usually also apply to cars with LOJACK devices. Usually, proof of installation, such as a receipt or service order must be provided as a proof.
Do not worry, a lot of Maryland car insurance companies are offering this type of car insurance discount. Other than that, you can also take advantage of other discounts as well such as low mileage discount, good driver discount and defensive driving discount.
I Was In an Acciden Now I Need To File An Auto Insurance Claim?
Reader’s Question:
What if I get into an accident in and the other driver doesn’t have car insurance? What if the other driver caused the accident, what would happen?
Denver
Huntsville, AL
In Huntsville and in any areas in Alabama, all drivers are mandated by law to carry 20/40 liability insurance to cover injuries or death of another in an accident. There are two potential problems: first, the driver is illegally driving without car insurance. Second, the driver only carries a minimum insurance coverage and your losses or car damages exceed that amount.
Most car insurance policies include Uninsured Motorist/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. If the other uninsured driver was the one who caused the accident, your own insurance policy will pay for your personal injuries, if you have “uninsured motorist” or medical payments” coverage. If the other driver’s auto insurance coverage is not enough to pay for all of your damages, your own insurance may pay the difference, if you have “underinsured motorist” coverage. If you do not have these kinds of car insurance or if your damages are more than the policy’s limit, you can sue the other driver’s negligence. If the other driver’s negligence was the cause of the accident, occupants in your car are covered for medical expenses and lost wages for a minimum of $20,000 per individual/$40,000 per accident. Thus, it will be best for drivers to purchase more than the minimum coverage. Also, it may be necessary to take your insurance company to court if they are not willing to cover the claim.
Lease Car Insurance – Does Vehicle Have To Be In My Name?
Reader’s Question:
I lease 2 vehicles and have auto insurance on both cars in Brookline, MA. My girlfriend drives one of the vehicles but canceled her insurance because neither vehicle is in her name. Does she still need insurance or are the vehicles insured under my auto insurance policy even though she is driving it? She is not listed on my policy.
Paul
Brookline, MA
Insurance carrier’s guidelines and insurance policy terms very so you need to verify with your specific insurance carrier to make sure that your girlfriend is covered when she drives your vehicles. You would not want her to get into an accident while driving one of your vehicles only to find out that she was not covered properly by your insurance company.
It is likely that your insurance company in MA will require her to be added to your car insurance policy since it appears that he is using one or both of your leased vehicles on a frequent basis.
Gap Insurance Coverage in Connecticut
Reader’s Question:
I have gap insurance in Fairfield, CT I wanted to know if my car continues to give me problems and return it back to the dealer to trade for a different vehicle would this be covered under the gap insurance?
Henry
Fairfield, CT
The answer is No.
Gap insurance is a type of car insurance coverage that pays the difference between your insurance settlement (from a covered loss) and your loan balance. If your primary insurance company is not paying out a settlement for a covered loss such as the vehicle being declared a total loss because of an accident then your GAP insurance will not pay out either.
If you are upside down on your car and want to trade it in, your gap insurance coverage would not be able to be used in this situation.
High Risk Insurance With SR22 – What Does It Cover?
Reader’s Question:
One of the employees had to obtain SR 22 insurance personally. We had to get a separate high risk insurance policy for her to be able to drive one of our company cars in Chicago IL. So, does her SR22 insurance policy cover her to drive any car including a company car?
Michael
Chicago IL
Generally, your employee’s insurance policy covers her when she drives other cars but as excess or secondary to the owner’s auto insurance. If her insurance would extend as secondary insurance to a company vehicle or work car would depend upon the terms and guidelines of her insurance policy and the guidelines of his insurance company.
The SR-22 insurance which is attached to her insurance is not a type of insurance but a form or certificate that the state is requiring him to have filed to prove that she is carrying the insurance on her that the state required. Typically this insurance is the state’s required liability car insurance.
Your employee can check from her insurance broker or agent to verify if her personal insurance policy would cover the company car but keep in mind that the company’s high risk insurance policy in Chicago will be primary and needs to stay on the company vehicle so that it will be properly covered.
Will Car Insurance Cost Go Up With Speeding Ticket in Illinois?
Reader’s Question:
Hi! I just received a speeding ticket out of state and I am wondering if this will make my car insurance cost go up? I have a good student discount and I would my insurance company find out about the speeding ticket or not? I got it in WI and I live in Bloomington, Illinois.
Jam
Bloomington, IL
Once you have been convicted of the speeding violation, the state of WI courts will likely send the information about this speeding citation back to Illinois. According to Administrative Code information out of state traffic violations will be added to your IL driving record and assigned points.
As for your insurance cost, if the WI speeding violation is put on your Illinois driving record then your insurance provider, could see it the next time they pull your Motor Vehicle Record. Depending upon their rating system this out of state traffic ticket may or may not increase your car insurance premium cost.
Car Insurance Rate Discount For High Mileage Cars?
Reader’s Question:
Like age and driving record, can the number of miles driven each year be a factor in determining the rates my insurance company in Greater Newark will set for me?
Kyle
Greater Newark, DE
The more miles your car spends on the road mean the more opportunities there are for you to hit someone or for someone to hit you. You should therefore expect the possibility that your premium will be higher the more miles you expect to drive.
This rule is fairly simple and straightforward. Insurance premiums would be based on miles driven annually. The problem that may come up in basing car insurance to mileage are; how to monitor the odometer, how to maintain continuing coverage when insurance lapses in the middle of an emergency trip, and how to set up prepayment arrangements.
Drivers who are same in other respects such as age, location, gender, driving safety record – pay almost the same insurance rate if they drive 5,000 or 50,000 miles a year. Therefore, motorists who have the greatest amount of driving each year would pay the most for insurance – all other things being equal – and those who drive the least would pay the least.
But how far you drive is not much of a factor in determining your premium unlike a driver’s age and driving record. Some companies offer low-mileage discounts, but these don’t come close to capturing the actual difference in accident risk between high- and low-mileage drivers. It’s important to have discussions with your insurance agent or company if this kind of discount is being offered. Or, you always have the option to shop for other auto insurance companies to find the best rates available.
Would You Like A Multi-line Car Insurance Discount?
Reader’s Question:
I heard it from my friends that I can save a lot of money by getting a multi-line insurance, how does it work? I’m thinking of getting a new insurance policy, I live in Omaha Nebraska.
Helene
Omaha, NE
A multiline insurance is an insurance instrument used to bundle the risk exposures of multiple insurance obligations into one insurance contract. The risk exposures put together are often related, such as property and casualty risks.
There are many different varieties of multiline contracts that exist, and they cover a wide range of risk exposures. The basis behind multiline contracts is that a firm is exposed to a portfolio of risk, and instead of creating a portfolio of insurance policies to manage that risk, they should use a single multiline contract to manage the portfolio of risks. One insurance contract is more efficient and less costly than many contracts.
Purchasing auto and home insurance from the same insurance company has several benefits. Most importantly, you’ll likely save a ton of money and it’s just so much easier to keep all your insurance in one place, provided you’ve chosen a good insurance company of course. When choosing a company, consider its reputation, location, service etc. (for example, see if you can check, pay and renew your policies online).
