Reader’s Question:

Is Personal Injury Protection PIP coverage for auto insurance in Albany, GA necessary for my car in case of automobile accidents?

Mike

Albany, Georgia

Personal injury protection insurance, or simply called PIP, is an insurance specifically relating to injuries of your own; thus, it is called “personal injury”. It is often an addition to your car insurance and will cover some, if not all, medical expenses and sometimes even personal damage related to the injury, but not to the treatment of it (for example; lost wages during recovery or other similar attributes).

Albany, Georgia automobile insurance laws do not require an individual to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP). However, purchasing PIP coverage is a good idea because it will cover your own expenses if you are injured in an accident that is caused by the other driver or someone else’s fault.

PIP coverage covers the medical expenses for you and your passengers that exceed the other driver’s coverage. For example, if you are in an accident with a minimally insured driver, and you and your passenger each have $35,000 in medical bills, however, the other driver’s insurance will only cover $25,000 of those bills. If you are unable to collect the full cost directly from the other driver, this will leave you to pay $10,000 out of your own pocket. But if you have PIP coverage, your own car insurance company will make up the difference.
