Reader question:

If I get into an accident and I’m not at fault, but I tell my car insuranced company about it, will my car insurance rates go up?

Alice

They shouldn’t.

For your car insurance rates to go up, normally you have to have been the at fault person for the accident. If you are in a no fault car insurance state, then this might not apply to you, though. So most of the time you have nothing to worry about when it comes to reporting an accident for which you were not to blame.

However, one thing you have to think about is how many accidents you have gotten into over a short period of time. Even if none of them were your fault, having a high incidence of accidents will raise red flags. Regardless of fault, your car insurance company will be well within reason to think something is up and raise your rates accordingly.
